Is there a meeting point between art and fashion? Perhaps obsession.
Certainly obsession is the turning point that leads Pharaildis Van den Broeck from meticulous work in fashion, both as a designer and as a manager, to a total devotion to art within her own atelier.
The transition took place in the early nineties when the Belgian-born designer shifted her focus from clothing to her own works of art on canvas, paper and various other media. The artist thus began to spend most of her time painting, gradually and decisively distancing herself from all forms of worldliness. The fulcrum of this path certainly has a number of personal implications, but it is also the result of a work experience in which art seemed to interpenetrate with fashion to the point of taking over. From the end of the 1980s to 1994, Van den Broeck worked for the Missoni fashion house and it was there that she perhaps entered into an obsession that would lead her to become an artist. An obsession with color, with the put together and with forms that seek to escape the control of a predetermined scheme.
Van den Broeck’s encounter with Missoni and the irresistible force of certain combinations are the focus of Francesco Urbano Ragazzi’s intervention, during which archive materials of the Italian-Belgian fashion designer and artist will be exhibited.
